How it’s used
마시다 is used for drinks of every kind; 술을 마시다 specifically means drinking alcohol. The honorific is 드시다, which covers both eating and drinking: 커피 드실래요? (“would you like some coffee?”). Casually, 한잔하다 means to have a drink together: 오늘 한잔할까?
Common mistake
Using 마시다 for soup or pills: ✗ 국을 마셔요, 약을 마셔요 → ✓ 국을 먹어요, 약을 먹어요. Korean “eats” both.
